The quality of the live power supply in Australia is hugely variable between the different power providers and even from street to street. Things like a large number of solar installations can impact the whole grid area and cause damage to sensitive electronics such as dimmers.
Why does power quality affect my devices?
Power supplies on small smart home devices are sensitive to low quality supply due to the impact trying to correct that supply has on the components. This is particularly prevalent in devices such as dimmers which must track the 0 crossing (the moment the AC sine wave crosses the middle point) in order to operate.
What can I do to improve it?
We have had good reports of circuit wide sine wave filters, such as the FN2060 available from FuseCo, correcting the feed and allowing smart home devices to operate correctly. In some cases multiple filters inline may be required, however you will need to test this on your site.
Sine wave filters DO NOT resolve the frequency impact caused by ripple control signals, though they may reduce it. Please refer to our article on ripple control for more information.
